About Me

My photo
Leana Niemand
I was born and bred in Cape Town, South Africa. In 2005, I took part in what was known as the longest MTB race in the world, the Tour D’Afrique, a race from Cairo to Cape Town. I bought a bicycle, flew to Cairo, and had no idea what I was letting myself in for. To my surprise, I cycled every inch of the way to Cape Town. On my return, I found it surprisingly hard to get back into regular life and decided to sell up and hit the road. I left Cape Town at the end of March 2007 in the company of Ernest Markwood. What was intended as a long cycle ride became an “around-the-world” cycling adventure? In the beginning, the two of us cycled together most of the time. Eventually, we found our own pace and direction in life and on the road. Here I am, amazingly 15 years later, and still going, and most of all, still loving it. I have no route plan, no sponsor, no goal, no mission of any sort. I go wherever the wind blows me, apart from the pandemic. 😁
